IB o A-Levels for international students
More and more Spanish families are considering having their children complete their Bachillerato in the United Kingdom, particularly in private boarding schools. Studying the final two years of secondary education in the UK allows students to improve their English, develop independence, and access an internationally recognised education system.
In the UK, there are two main academic pathways equivalent to the Spanish Bachillerato: A-Levels and the International Baccalaureate (IB). Both options provide access to universities in the United Kingdom, Spain, and many other countries.
Which school years correspond to Bachillerato in the UK?
In the British system, the final two years of school are:
Year 12
Year 13
Together, these are known as the Sixth Form. It is during these two years that students prepare for A-Levels or the IB Diploma Programme.
Many international students join directly in Year 12, after completing 4º de ESO or Year 11.
Option 1: A-Levels
A-Levels (Advanced Levels) are the most traditional qualification in the British system.
Students typically choose three or four subjects, which they study in depth over two years. This allows for a high level of specialisation based on their interests and university goals.
Examples of A-Level subjects
Mathematics
Biology
Chemistry
Physics
Economics
Business
History
Geography
Psychology
Art & Design
This system is ideal for students who already have a clear idea of what they want to study at university, as they can focus on the subjects most relevant to their future.
Advantages of A-Levels
Greater academic specialisation
Flexibility in subject choice
Highly valued by UK universities
Widely offered across British schools
Option 2: International Baccalaureate (IB)
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB) is an international qualification offered by many British schools.
Unlike A-Levels, the IB is broader and more balanced, as students study six subjects from different areas:
Language and Literature
Foreign Language (Spanish can be taken as a subject)
Social Sciences
Experimental Sciences
Mathematics
Arts or an additional subject
In addition, the IB includes three core components:
Extended Essay (independent research project)
Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service)
Advantages of the IB
A more well-rounded academic education
Internationally recognised qualification
Excellent preparation for universities in Europe, the UK, and the United States
Strong development of critical thinking and research skills
IB or A-Levels: Which is the better option?
There is no universally “better” option — it depends on the student’s profile.
A-Levels are often better suited to students who:
already know what they want to study at university
prefer to specialise in a small number of subjects
want to focus on specific areas such as sciences, economics, or art
The IB is often better suited to students who:
prefer to keep several subjects open
have a wide range of interests
are looking for a more international and broad-based education
At Boarding UK, we assess each student individually to recommend the programme and school that best suits their goals.
University options after studying in the UK
Both A-Levels and the IB provide access to universities in:
The United Kingdom
Spain
Europe
The United States
Many other countries
Students apply to UK universities through the UCAS system, and universities make conditional offers based on predicted grades.
Why study the Bachillerato in a British boarding school?
In addition to academic excellence, studying at a British boarding school offers:
Full immersion in English
Development of independence and maturity
High-quality sports and extracurricular activities
An international environment
Excellent preparation for university
